Green Roofing is taking the industry by storm.

It’s better for the environment and it can save you big bucks if it’s done right.

The newer systems such as the white TPO, EPDM, and other elastomeric coatings are suppose to be major energy savers due mainly to the light, reflective coatings they feature.

While this is true, the actual energy savings can vary drastically depending on the climate in your area. To calculate your potential savings, you need to take into account how many Heating Degree Days (HDD) and Cooling Degree Days (CDD) you will have. If you have more HDD that CDD, this system’s “greenness” is just a facade.

The better solution is to get proper insulation. The St. Louis city code for commercial flat roofing is a minimal base insulation of 2-3 inches thick (giving you an R-Value of 20-30).

It doesn’t matter how many HDD’s or CDD’s you have, it matters what your R-Value is and what type of roofing system protects it. A good R-Value will help to insulate the temperature in your home in all weather.

One thing insulation cannot do is protect your roof from the sun’s damaging rays during the summer months. Strong rays can harm your roofing materials & heat your building.

That is why we offer reflective coatings, white cap sheets, and light colored gravel. The latter has the added bonus of protecting your roof from hail damage.
